Moving Toward Health

Across the street, my neighbors were putting up red, white, and blue streamers, a shiny pinwheel spinning lazily in the morning breeze. It struck me, watching them, that a birthday — any birthday, a nation’s or a person’s — is really an invitation. An invitation to notice how far you’ve come, and to move, deliberately, toward whatever health looks like next.

In Nia, we talk often about the body as a place to practice this kind of noticing. Every class is a small independence day: a chance to loosen what’s stiff, to celebrate a range of motion you didn’t have last year, to declare — with your feet, your hips, your breath — that you’re still becoming.

A ritual worth borrowing

This year, instead of just watching the fireworks, I tried something new: I gave myself ten minutes before the festivities to move through the White Belt principles slowly, outside, barefoot in the grass. No music, no mirror, just weight shifting from foot to foot while the neighborhood got ready to celebrate. It felt like its own small liberation.

Whatever you’re celebrating this season — a country’s birthday, your own, or simply another Wednesday morning class — I hope you’ll take a moment to move like it matters. Because it does.

Every step and every moment is an opportunity to move toward health.

See you in class,
Janet
